Bryson sounds, to put it mildly, a real jerk. It’s not all yuks—though it is hard not to grin idiotically. Now, two decades later, they are about to change again.

The appalachian trail—from springer mountain, ga., to mount katahdin, me.—consists of some five million steps, and bryson ( notes from a small island, 1996, etc.) seems to coax a laugh, and often an unexpectedly startling insight, out of each one he traverses. The man is known as wilde. The publisher recommends gone to the woods for kids age 8 to 12.

The woods is a campy thriller about an unsolved mystery regarding four teens who disappeared into the woods surrounding their summer camp and never came out.
